A sailing expedition for everyone. Ideal for families.

Sail the east coast of the Algarve towards Vila Real de Santo Antonio (30 miles) and came enter into the Guadiana river with high water. The bar is shallow and requires some planing to go in. Piloge techiques will be used on the way into the Guadiana river.

Overnight in Vila Real or Ayamonte and the next day sail upon the river towards Alcoutim.

The river empties into the Gulf of Cadiz between Ayamonte and Vila Real de Santo António, the two highly touristic regions of the Algarve and the sea-side of Andalusia.

There it forms a saltmarsh estuary. Sailors from far away have been visiting the Guadiana for thousands of years. However the first to arrive were probably the Phoenicians from the eastern Mediterranean, who arrived about 1000 BC.

Phoenicians were merchants bringing dyes, fabrics, ceramics, glass, metals, wine, seeds for crops and olive oil to trade with the locals.

Ancients established a fishing port at Vila Real de Santo António, therefore Alcoutim and Mértola were comercial ports. This scenic trip upon the Guadiana River takes 4-5 hours and we need to go with the flow.

Time to taste the local food and learn old stories about the village, fisheries and tradicional economy.

You can take a Competent Crew course during this sailing expedition.

What's the plan?

A plan is just a plan. We like to sail, we don't like to motor, so things could get off track sometimes. As sailors we are always depending on the weather conditions, everything is uncertain.

Nevertheless, here is the plan for the expedition:

Day 1

  • Check-in, shopping in the local market, safety briefing
  • Sail inside Ria Formosa. If we have nice SW breeze we sail to Vila Real St António

Day 2-4

  • Sail towards Mazagon
  • Explore local harbours such has Isla Canela, El Rompido

Day 4-5

  • Sail back to Faro

If you want to know more details about the plan and destinations please contact us here.

Atlantic Explorers provided me and my friends an awesome experience sailing the Guadiana. I keep in mind the beautiful landscapes in both sides of the river, the quietness, the regions’ well-coming communities and to eat the most tasteful food in local restaurants.
